Abstract

The use of rules has been implemented in windows operating systems today as defensive mechanisms like the Anti-malware Scan Interface (AMSI) to scan and prevent malicious code execution, especially inside the .NET Common Language Runtime (CLR). While these protections are fundamental to enterprise protection, they are also introducing problems for authorized penetration testers who should measure defensive resiliency. A detailed research-oriented paper is presented in this paper: a modified windows bypass tool, initially analyzed as a command line tool, which has been systematically extended to a graphical user interface (GUI) application for organized security tests. The study analyzes the tool’s architectural redesign, simulated persistence mechanisms and its functioning within approved red team engagements. Through experiments, we test the degree to which GUI-based testing affects configuration accuracy, repeatability and defensive insight generation. Our findings indicate that GUI-based test tools will greatly cut down on configuration errors and enhance repeatability, facilitating better assessment of endpoint detection and response (EDR) capabilities.
